Chimney work in Newton's village housing stock

Newton is thirteen villages, and the chimneys change with them. Late-Victorian and Shingle-style houses carry tall ornamental stacks with corbelled brickwork. The 1910s to 1930s center-entrance colonials and Tudors usually stack two or three flues together. Postwar colonial reproductions copied the look with thinner masonry. Big houses here often vent a living room, dining room, and primary bedroom fireplace on one or two stacks, lined with clay tile and still using original throat dampers.

Multiple flues in a shared stack cause the complaint we hear most. Burn in the family room, smell smoke upstairs. The idle fireplace becomes the return path for air the house is pulling in. Flues ending at different heights make it worse. Test this yourself: light a match at the unused firebox while the other burns and watch which way the smoke leans.

Gas log conversions are everywhere in Newton renovations. Many left the damper clamped open permanently. Wood inserts installed without a full liner to the top are the other common find.

Mature canopy along the Charles and through Waban and Chestnut Hill fills uncapped flues with leaves and nesting debris. Freeze-thaw and ice damming attack crown washes and corbel joints first. Binoculars from the driveway show more than people expect.

What Happens After You Call Us

  1. 1

Call and tell us what the fireplace is doing, or not doing. We book a two hour window, and if the truck runs late, you get a text before the window starts.

  2. 2

We look at the firebox, the smoke chamber, the flue and the cap, then hand you a firm price. The estimate is free, and if the answer is masonry rebuilding, we say so and charge you nothing.

  3. 3

We sweep or repair, run the gas unit or build a test fire to confirm the draft, vacuum the hearth and carry the drop cloths out with us. You pay the number we quoted, not a dollar over it.

Frequently Asked Questions

My house has three fireplaces on one chimney and smoke sometimes rolls back into the dining room when the living room fire is going. What's happening?

That's cross-flue spillage, and it's one of the most common complaints we hear in Newton's larger center-entrance colonials and Shingle-style houses. When several flues share a single stack, a fire drawing hard on one flue can pull air down an idle one, especially if the flue tops terminate at slightly different heights or the idle damper is open. We check termination heights, damper seals, and whether one flue is undersized for the fireplace opening it serves. Often the fix is closing dampers that are left open out of habit, adding proper caps, or correcting a short flue at the top of the stack. Sometimes the house itself is the problem, since tight renovated homes starve the fire for combustion air.

How far out are you booking a sweep?

Early fall is the crunch, and in Newton it's worse than average because many homes need three or four flues done in one visit rather than one. If you call in September or October, expect to wait. Late winter and spring are wide open, and that's genuinely the better time to have work done anyway, since any repair we find can be scheduled before the next heating season instead of in the middle of it. If you smell smoke in a room you're not burning in, or you think there's an animal or a blockage, tell us that when you call and we'll treat it differently than a routine maintenance sweep.

What usually goes wrong on these older Newton chimneys?

Three things come up again and again. First, deteriorated clay tile liners in the 1910s–1930s colonials and Tudors, where the original tiles have cracked or the mortar joints between them have washed out. Second, original dampers that no longer close, either rusted open or warped, which lets heated air out of the house all winter and lets cold air and odor in. Third, the decorative brickwork. Newton has a lot of tall ornamental chimneys with corbelled detail near the top, and freeze-thaw gets into that exposed masonry first. Crowns crack, corbel courses loosen, and once water is in the stack it works downward. Ice damming at the roofline makes it worse where the chimney meets the flashing.

We converted the living room fireplace to gas logs during a renovation. Does it still need sweeping?

It needs inspection, and often it needs cleaning, just not for the same reason. Gas doesn't leave creosote, but it produces acidic moisture that attacks clay tile and mortar from the inside, and a lot of Newton conversions were dropped into flues that were originally sized for wood. An oversized flue runs cool and condenses. We also find debris in these flues, because once people stop burning wood they stop thinking about the chimney, and a gas log set gives no feedback when the flue is partly blocked. If you have a high-end wood insert instead, that's a different conversation, and those do need regular sweeping of the liner.

What makes one Newton sweep cost more than another?

Mostly the number of flues and how you reach them. A single fireplace is straightforward. A large Victorian or Shingle-style house with living room, dining room, and primary bedroom fireplaces on one or two stacks is three or four separate cleanings and inspections in one visit, and that's reflected in the number. Height matters too, since the tall ornamental chimneys here often need ladder work or roof access to inspect the crown and caps properly. Wood-burning fireplaces in regular use take longer than gas conversions. We'll tell you what we found and what it would take to address it before we touch anything beyond the sweep itself, and you decide from there.
