What has to happen before an insert fits

Will an insert actually fit my fireplace? Firebox dimensions decide it. We measure front width, rear width, depth, and the height under the damper. Pre-1940 fireboxes here run shallow and taper toward the back. The damper plate usually comes out so the liner and the insert's flue collar can pass straight up.

The liner is the real work. Stainless runs from the collar to the crown, sized to the appliance, insulated where the listing calls for it. Unlined or parged flues in the oldest brick stock change the approach. Tall narrow party-wall flues often offset near the shoulder. We scope that with a camera first, not on install day.

A block-off plate at the throat matters more than people expect. Without one, room air climbs the void around the liner and the blower fights it. Direct-vent gas inserts need a gas run and a nearby outlet, which in a triple-decker often means a basement route and a floor penetration.

Condo and addition fireboxes are factory-built metal with a Class A chase. Only an insert listed for that exact firebox goes in. Substituting voids the listing.

If the crown is failed, the brick spalling, or the stack separating from the house, masonry comes first. An insert installed on a wet chimney just hides the leak.
