What has to happen inside the chimney before a gas fireplace runs
Can your old masonry fireplace take a gas log set? Sometimes. Often not. Boston's pre-1940 brick stock has flues lined with clay tile or parged mortar, sometimes nothing at all. Gas burns cool and wet. That flue gas condenses on cold brick and soaks the masonry. The usual fix is a stainless liner sized to the appliance, not the old opening. Liner diameter comes off the manufacturer's vent table. Guessing it oversized causes the same condensation you were trying to stop.
Direct-vent inserts change the math. They pull combustion air from outside and seal the firebox behind glass. That means a coaxial pipe up the flue and a block-off plate at the damper. Tall narrow party-wall flues in triple-deckers behave badly on natural draft; direct-vent sidesteps that entirely. Shared flues in two- and three-families are a hard stop until the venting is separated.
Prefab metal fireboxes in condos and additions have their own rule: the Class A chase is listed for one specific appliance. Dropping in a different brand voids the listing.
Gas line work needs a licensed plumber and a permit. We coordinate that. What drives cost here is liner length and whether the crown is sound first. So are the cap and flashing.
