The pilot lights, you hold the knob, and it drops out the moment you let go. Or the wall switch does nothing. Or the glass has gone hazy gray and the flames look lazy and sooty. Those are three different faults, not one.

Most older gas hearths here run on millivolt power. A thermopile sits in the pilot flame and generates its own small voltage to hold the gas valve open. Output has to be checked under load, with the switch closed, not just at rest. A thermopile can read fine open-circuit and still fail. Dust and pet hair can narrow the pilot orifice. Spider webbing does the same, and the flame no longer wraps the probe. Carbon tracking on ceramic logs usually means a log has shifted off its locating pin or the air shutter moved.

Local wrinkles matter. Direct-vent inserts in condos and additions vent through coaxial pipe in a Class A chase. Nests and screen lint at the termination starve the burner, and the unit shuts itself down. Gas log sets dropped into pre-1940 masonry fireplaces are a different animal. Those flues are often clay-tile-lined, parged, or unlined, and a rusted or missing cap lets rain sit on the burner all summer.

Some repairs we decline. Discontinued valves and modules on orphaned brands can be unobtainable, and a rust-perforated firebox is replaced, not patched.
