Gas Fireplace Pilot Light Repair in Boston, MA

What a pilot light repair actually involves

The gas gets shut at the appliance valve first. Then the glass front or log set comes out. We look at the pilot flame before touching anything. A healthy standing pilot wraps the thermocouple tip in blue. A lazy yellow flame usually means a blocked orifice. Spider webs or lint and soot usually cause it. The pilot hood and orifice get cleaned, not just blown at.

Next comes the millivolt test. Thermocouples are read at the valve connection. Thermopiles get read open-circuit, then again under load with the wall switch closed. A thermopile that reads fine cold and collapses under load is failing, even though it lights. Corroded switch wire and loose spade terminals cause the same symptom, so those get checked separately.

Intermittent pilot systems are a different animal. Those rely on flame rectification, so a dirty flame rod or a poor ground will lock the module out. Battery backup packs in direct-vent inserts leak and corrode the holder.

Boston adds its own causes. Tall narrow party-wall flues downdraft and blow standing pilots out. Rain through a missing cap rusts pilot assemblies in old masonry fireboxes. Prefab condo units vent through a chase, and a snow-packed terminal will trip the safety every time.
